Altit Fort is the oldest fort in the northern regions, situated at the base of Hunza Valley. It was established during the reign of the renowned Mir, the king of Hunza. The fort holds significant historical importance and is recognized as the birthplace and capital of the city of Hunza. Constructed in the 11th century, it showcases the artistry and technology of ancient civilizations. Not only has it endured numerous assaults from invaders, but it has also withstood several earthquakes since its inception, making it one of the most remarkable architectural feats of its era. In its early years, the fort was encircled by city inhabitants and traders who transported goods from around the globe through the ancient Silk Road, establishing it as a cultural center in the region. Since 1990, it has been under the aegis of the Aga Khan Foundation and functions as a tourist museum.
Baltit Fort, a historical structure approximately 700 years old, is perched on the heights of Karimabad in Hunza Valley. In former times, it served as the governance center during the reign of the mirs. The royal family initially resided in Altit Fort before relocating to Baltit Fort, where they governed the surrounding areas for thousands of years. Its distinctive architecture was damaged during wartime invasions by the Maharaja of Kashmir and other rulers, but it was later restored to its former appearance by the Aga Khan Development Foundation. Today, it stands as a testament to the region’s history and is one of the prominent tourist destinations in Gilgit-Baltistan.
