Chilam Joshi Chitral Kalash Festival Tour Overview

The Kalasha people celebrate the Kalash festival. The Kalasha people live in the Kalash valley of Pakistan. The Hindu Kush mountain range surrounds the Kalash valley. The Kalash festival occurs thrice a year, in spring, summer, and winter. The spring festival, called the Chilam Joshi, starts around 13 May.

A summer festival called the Kalash Uchal festival is held from 20 August to 23 August 2026. The winter festival, called the Choimus Festival, runs from 15 December to 20 December 2026. During the festival, people not only drink, dance, and have fun in general, but also worship their Gods and spirits, making offerings and even making sacrifices. Also, young men and women choose their future husbands and wives during this festival.

The date for the Chilam Joshi Festival changes each year, usually falling around mid-May. In 2025, the festival is expected to be celebrated from May 13 to May 17, 2026, in the picturesque Kalash Valley. The stunning backdrops of Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir add to the rugged beauty of Chitral’s mountainous landscape.

This festival, deeply rooted in Kalash culture, marks the arrival of spring and offers an opportunity for people to express gratitude to the gods for life, prosperity, and well-being.

Today, we will depart from Islamabad to Chitral, traveling through the Lowari Tunnel, which is approximately 10.4 kilometers long and connects Dir and Chitral. In the past, before the construction of the tunnel, passengers traveled via Lowari Pass, and the Chitral region was often disconnected from the rest of the country for six months. We will reach Ayun, the closest village to the Kalash tribes, and a beautiful valley to explore. Our accommodation for the night will be at Ayun Fort, which features lovely botanical gardens and offers a bird’s-eye view of the valley and river.

We will walk to the town center to experience the distinctive culture of the Kalash people. Lunch will be served in a local home where we will enjoy traditional Kalash food. In the evening, we will head back to Bumburet.
