Highlights from our summer travels across Gilgit-Baltistan, a land of spectacular mountains, valleys, glaciers, cold deserts, rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. The home of three of the mightiest mountain ranges in the world: the Karakoram, the Himalayas, and the Hindu Kush, all three of which come together at the Three Junction. The home of five of the fourteen eight-thousanders in the world, including the world’s second-highest peak, the K-2. The home of three of the world’s longest glaciers outside the polar regions. A land whose breathtaking natural beauty is surpassed only by the warm hospitality of its people.
While the entire region was amongst the most beautiful places I have ever visited anywhere in the world, no place was more beautiful than when you exit the Deosai National Park, cross the security checkpoint at Chilam, make your way through Burzil Pass, and then enter the village of Minimarg and travel onwards to Domel. If there is heaven to be found here on earth, then surely no other place but this can claim to be it.
Byarsa in Skardu, Khoj in Shigar (the villa comes with its hammock right on top of the Shigar River), Army Guest House in Minimarg, Wazir Mahal in Gorikot, Riverdale Resort in Gilgit (where the Pakistani drama, Khaie, was shot), Ambiance in Hunza (the room comes with a wraparound balcony offering 360-degree sweeping views of Hunza, including the Rakaposhi Mountain and the Ladyfinger Peak), and Famree in Attabad Lake.
We were travelling across some of the scariest (paved and unpaved) roads and tracks in the world. Nothing is more thrilling than traversing the Deosai National Park (its average elevation of 13,500 feet makes it the second-highest plateau in the world). This part of Pakistan opens up for a few months in the summer. Otherwise, there is no access to it. We went right when the roads had cleared.
We also loved driving the Karakoram Highway (dubbed the eighth wonder of the world), all the way up to Khunjerab Pass, Pakistan’s border with China. At 15,397 feet, this is the highest paved international border crossing in the world.
