7. Dudipatsar Lake

Overview – Dudipatsar Lake Trek

The Dudipatsar Lake trek is an enchanting journey into the core of the Kaghan Valley, granting travelers an unparalleled experience filled with natural beauty and tranquility. The water of Dudipatsar, sitting at 3900 meters, is aptly named by the locals as “dudi” (white or milky), “pat” (mountains), and “SAR” (water), symbolizing the unspoiled, snow-covered peaks that encircle it and impart the lake its distinctive milky appearance.

This trek is not merely about reaching the lake; it’s about immersing oneself in diverse ecosystems, breathtaking views, and a traditional lifestyle that has largely remained untouched by modern technology. The adventure kicks off in Islamabad, where trekkers are transported to the village of Besal, 3250 meters above sea level.

The journey itself is a visual delight, setting the stage for the wonders that lie ahead. The trek commences at Besal, and hikers embark on the first segment of their journey toward Mula Ki Basti after spending the night there. This portion of the trek spans 10 kilometers and typically takes 6-8 hours, depending on individual fitness levels. The trail is filled with natural beauty, showcasing lush green meadows, vibrant wildflowers, and numerous streams. Hikers may also encounter grazing livestock and charming villages where locals live in harmony with nature, relying on natural resources for their livelihood.

Upon reaching Mula Ki Basti, trekkers set up their tents and relish the tranquil surroundings to relax and rejuvenate. The next day is dedicated to exploring Dudipatsar Lake and its nearby areas. The lake’s pristine waters mirror the snow-covered mountains, creating a breathtaking and serene view. For those seeking an additional challenge, an optional ascent to Saral Pass provides even more spectacular scenery and a gratifying sense of achievement. Hikers can spend the day taking in the area’s natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere before returning to their campsite at Mula Ki Basti for the night.

The final day of the expedition starts early, with hikers retracing their steps back to Besal. This descent typically takes about 4 hours, allowing ample opportunity to appreciate the views on the return journey. After freshening up at Moon Restaurant in Besal, the group heads back to Islamabad, stopping in Kaghan for lunch. The trek concludes once participants arrive in Islamabad, generally around 9:00 PM, leaving them with enduring memories of the stunning landscapes, the camaraderie of their fellow trekkers, and a profound sense of achievement.

The Dudipatsar Lake Trek is the perfect blend of physical challenge and natural splendor, providing an escape into a realm where nature’s beauty prevails. It is a journey that not only showcases the magnificent Dudipatsar Lake but also offers an intimate glimpse into a lifestyle that harmonizes with the natural world.
